Oh to have loved and lost, only to find love once more. It’s the age old story of boy meets girl, or in this case….of girl meets dress! Pre-loved fashion is having a huge resurgence in Jersey, beating the competition of eBay or online social media platform alternatives by delivering up an enjoyable boutique shopping experience with the chance to share your love of everlasting style and high-end fashion.

It is, at last, an affordable way to get your hands on some high-end designer pieces that you once only dreamt of owning. Ok, so they won’t be the current collections, but when it comes to purchasing high end fashion, the style is everlasting and the quality is worth investing in.

Recent surveys have shown that more women are becoming open to the idea of purchasing second hand clothes and receiving these as gifts, perhaps from the growing realisation that we need to become more switched on as a society to reusing and recycling our produce and not falling victim to fashion landfill!

Jersey has a fantastic selection of charity stores which are always worth riffling through, with even more opening up in recent months. By the nature of our affluent population, you would assume that there should be a steady stream of designer wear landing on most of these shops doorsteps. Sure, it takes some hunting and a commitment to regular visits, but there are some great pieces to be found.

However, it is the rise of the ‘pre-loved’ boutiques that has ignited my love of fashion in Jersey once more. Gladrags in St Aubins and the more recently opened Tresor Jersey in the town centre, are treasure boxes of fashion treats, many never having been worn before. The success of these stores is based around treating them very differently to charity shops, being selective about the stock they receive, selling only good quality pieces which they know their clients will be interested in.

Like any other retail outlet, they are able to curate their shop as they would see fit, working with the seasons and current trends. A large supply of pre-loved items keeps the stock constantly turning over, with a roaring trade of business now visiting these stores. For those looking to sell items both stores work on a commission basis, giving a cut of what is sold without any guarantee of sale.

Tracey at Tresor Jersey is a seamstress at heart and enjoys repairing all the clothes that come into the store, sometimes making them appear better than new. She also offers an alteration service alongside her pre-loved clothes, helping clients fit into that must-have outfit if she possibly can!
