Revamped & Revitalised

Has anyone else noticed that the De Gruchys department store has now got a touch of the Selfridges about it? Of course you have! It was a large shopping void to fill whilst undergoing refurbishment, but boy was it worth it. Retail therapy, spa worthy treatments and delicious food to boot, it’s now practically a one-stop shop for all the luxuries you could wish for. De Gruchys invited me along to sample their revamped and slightly different department store experience…

Now this is my idea of the ultimate girlie spa day! Somewhere where you can get a soothing facial, expert beauty treatment and tips, a make-up overhaul with a dash of retail therapy thrown in for good measure! Ok, so it lacks the traditional swimming pool accompaniment, but then I always did hate getting my hair wet and would much prefer to leave my pamper session feeling relaxed AND looking like a million dollars.

What de Gruchys has over other spa rivals is the ability to combine everything that the modern women loves under one roof. From brows and bags to bangles and bubbles, there is nothing about the re-vamped store that doesn’t scream elegance and luxury. I took my friend Natalie along for a much needed day of pampering and indulgence to see if it lived up to my high expectations.

First on the menu was a brow-over at the Shavata Brow & Nail Spa to pop my threading cherry. Rakamjeet educates us on the advantages threading offers over waxing and tweezing eyebrows, being much gentler on skin and achieving a more precise shape. Working her thread at amazing speed we were left seriously impressed with the service, which not only shaped our brows, but advised us where regrowth was needed to achieve the perfect shape for our faces. I hastily booked my next appointment with anticipation to see results develop over a prolonged course of treatment. Instant convert!

With brows to die for it was time for the rest of our faces to catch up and whilst Natalie enjoyed a skin analysis and make-over with Clinique, I was treated to a tutorial from Renata of Estee Lauder. Describing herself as “part of the furniture” Renata has been with de Gruchys for five years out of a total beauty career of nine. We talked products she couldn't live without (Advanced Night Repair Serum and Double Wear Makeup), how to solve beauty quandaries (wearing blue eye make and having green eyes) and bonded over how the right punch of colour can instantly life someone’s mood.

Feeling like a super model there was just the right amount of time to strut down the first floor fashion department to browse through the in-store franchises in order to work up an appetite. Downstairs we tripped over the huge range of designer handbags and paid a visit to my favourite Prada sunglasses, before “investing” in key autumn pieces from collections including Mint Velvet, Karen Millen and L.K.Bennett to name but a few.

Having amassed a huge wish list in my wake we tumbled with arms laden into the in-house cafe, Infusions by Tiffin. Refuelling with a combination of handmade sandwiches, quiche and divine gluten free cakes the laid back surroundings were the perfect back drop to reflect on our purchases and new looks over a glass of well earnt sparkling wine.

Giddy from a heady combination of wine and shopping we left the store in high spirits, keen to unveil our transformations and news of a revolutionary new spa experience to the rest of the Island!
